I was born in Syracuse, NY and have lived in a number of places including Gainesville, FL, Hightstown, NJ, Nashville, TN, Harrisonburg, VA, Columbus, OH, Fairfax, VA, Athens, GA, Houston, TX, and Charlottesville, VA.

After attending Turner Ashby High School, I received a Bachelors of Science degree from James Madison University , a Masters in Public Administration from The Ohio State University , and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Georgia.
R. Ryan Nelson: Family
My wife, Joelle Masters Nelson, and I have two children Jacqueline Masters Nelson (age 19) and Edward William "Teddy" Nelson (age 15), a cat Tiger (age 15 - Ocicat), and a dog Kalee (age 11 - Rhodesian Ridgeback). Rocket a 13-year-old Siamese cat, is gone but not forgotten. My parents, Eileen S. and William R. Nelson are both retired professors from James Madison University, in Psychology and Political Science, respectively. My sister, Pam, lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and my brother, Ted, lives in Atlanta, GA.
Ryan is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, an avid golfer, tennis player, and "parrothead."
