I was born in Syracuse, NY and have lived in a number of places including Gainesville, FL, Hightstown, NJ, Nashville, TN, Harrisonburg, VA, Columbus, OH, Fairfax, VA, Athens, GA, Houston, TX, and Charlottesville, VA.

After attending Turner Ashby High School, I received a Bachelors of Science degree from James Madison University , a Masters in Public Administration from The Ohio State University , and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Georgia.
R. Ryan Nelson: Family
My wife, Joelle Masters Nelson, and I have two children Jacqueline Masters Nelson (age 20) and Edward William "Teddy" Nelson (age 16), and a cat Tiger (age 15 - Ocicat). Kalee, a 12-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Rocket a 13-year-old Siamese cat, are gone but not forgotten. My parents, Eileen S. and William R. Nelson (deceased) were both professors at James Madison University, in Psychology and Political Science, respectively. My sister, Pam, lives in Richmond, VA, and my brother, Ted, lives in Atlanta, GA.
Ryan is a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, an avid golfer, tennis player, and "parrothead."
